The Best Crypto Reward Cards - Reviews, Rewards, and Offers

Willthy Blog - Best Crypto Reward Cards by iStockphoto

Companies have been fiercely competing with one another to attract consumers with juicy signup bonuses, miles, and other benefits in the traditional card rewards landscape. Over the past couple of years, we have seen a variety of reward cards becoming available with various reward models. Similar to traditional credit cards, crypto reward cards also come with added benefits like cashback in Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, lounge access, entertainment reimbursements, and more.

The one significant difference in cashback between traditional vs. crypto is that the USD value earned will be dependent on the price of the underlying cryptocurrency accrued.

In this post, we will discuss some of the best crypto reward cards that you can get right now and also some upcoming cards to look out for.

Fold

Fold Bitcoin Astronaut

Fold is a Bitcoin rewards app that allows you to earn and spend Bitcoin in a fun way. Fold offers two tiers of Visa prepaid cards backed by Sutton Bank and you can use them to earn Bitcoin anywhere Visa debit cards are accepted. Opening a Fold account essentially means opening a checking account with Sutton Bank on the backend. You will need to fund your Fold account by transferring fiat money from your personal bank account in order to spend on purchases.

How it works: After you make a qualifying purchase with your Fold card, load up the Fold App on your phone and you will be prompt with a purchase wheel. Spin the wheel and see what reward you land on. Earnings will be in Satoshis (the smallest unit of Bitcoin) and you could earn up to 100% cashback on the premium card.

 Pros:

  • Chance to win 1 full Bitcoin.
  • Fun way to earn Bitcoin back on purchases.
  • Regular updates to their purchase wheel to spice up the fun.
  • Free daily spin wheel just by downloading the app without signing up for a card.
  • The app is easy to use.

Cons:

  • Flimsy plastic cards compared to regular credit cards. Although they are reportedly rolling out the gold foil cards in July 2021.
  • For users who are used to the ease of credit cards. Funding a debit card account could be cumbersome especially on weekends when the banks are closed.
  • $21 activation fee on the intro card is silly.
  • Purchase wheel available on qualified purchases more than $3.
  • U.S. only.

Crypto.com

Crypto.com

Crypto.com
(formerly known as Monaco) aims to bring mass crypto adoption to the world. They allow you to buy and sell crypto on their exchange and in addition, offer multiple tiers of Visa reward cards. Like the Fold card above, Crypto.com reward cards are prepaid cards that you need to fund before making purchases on them.

To reap the benefits of their reward cards, users need to purchase and stake Crypto.com's CRO token for at least 6 months. The CRO tokens staked will accrue interest at 6% APR. Only the midnight blue card does not require staking with a basic 1% cashback.  All this can be done on their easy-to-use mobile app.

As you can see from the card tiers below, due to the high staking rates for the black, rose, and icy white, those cards are unrealistic for most. Ruby Steel seems to be the popular choice by most people at a staking rate of $400. To get the Spotify membership reimbursed, you will simply charge the monthly fee on the card. This reimbursement feature works the same way with the other benefits like Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.

For the travel bugs, LoungeKey is similar to Priority Pass airport lounge access offered by the likes of Chase Sapphire Reserve and Amex Platinum.

Pros:

  • No annual fees.
  • Premium metal cards.
  • All in one app.
    • Buy, sell, send, spend crypto.
    • Freeze the card if you misplaced it.
    • Upgrade/downgrade card tiers.
  • Available in several countries.

    Cons:

    • The staking model may not make sense for some consumers.
    • High staking rates to unlock additional benefits.
    • You lose some reward benefits if you unstake your CRO tokens.
    • Some users reported a long wait time for physical card delivery.
    • You could get hit with a small fee if you don't use the card for a year.
    • For users who are used to the ease of credit cards. Funding a debit card account could be cumbersome especially on weekends when the banks are closed.

BlockFi is becoming a crypto-financial services powerhouse. Their platform allows you to trade, borrow & lend crypto, and they are also due to roll out their Visa credit card. BlockFi's credit card will be in direct competition with Gemini's and we suspect that there will be more BlockFi reward benefits announced in addition to the list below. You can sign up for the waitlist here. Benefits include:

    • No annual fee.
    • Black metal card.
    • 1.5% Bitcoin back on every qualifying purchase anywhere Visa is accepted (3.5% back on Bitcoin in the first 90 days).
    • No foreign transaction fees.
    • Stablecoin APR interest boost.
    • Trading rebates.
    • Auto rental collision damage waiver.
    • Travel and Emergency assistance services.
    • Concierge and exclusive hotel deals.

Overall, crypto reward card models will disrupt the traditional ones that we are used to. In my opinion, they do not replace premium cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve and the Amex Platinum, but rather, as a compliment to those cards. It all comes down to how you value those benefits. For example, travel bugs might prefer to earn Chase Ultimate Rewards and then transfer to airline partners for better flight deals (For more content, head to The Points Guy). Others might prefer to use the Fold card to accumulate Bitcoin if they expect Bitcoin to appreciate long term. I encourage you to do your own research and see what is best for your lifestyle and situation.
